Escaping the "I Need It"s

With a love for all things beauty and a Bloglovin' feed always enticing me to buy things, I've had to become an expert at avoiding the "I need it" desires. It's so easy to get swept up into product hype or new releases that before we know it we're eating ramen counting the days until the next payday. Here are some tips on how to enjoy the beauty world without it taking all your money.

Be skeptical: Suddenly seeing a lot of big name bloggers talking about the same perfume or recent launch? It's not just a coincidence. Sponsorship and support for blogging from companies is fine, but don't get sucked into a product just because all the big names are suddenly talking about it. Be skeptical of these spikes in interest for a particular product. Wait around to see if people are still talking about them after the initial wave.

Do research: If you find yourself thinking, "I need it," do research on the product before whipping out your debit card. Look at swatches, a handful of reviews, and determine why you want it. If it's to solve a problem or fill a gap in your makeup then it can go on your wishlist. If it's because everyone is talking about it, give it some time to see if you really actually want it. More times than I can count a product I thought I desperately needed falls off my radar once the hype dies down.

Stop buying the same thing: We all don't need six lipsticks from different brands in the exact same shade. We also don't need fifteen blushes. Buy products to fill the space of a product you've recently used up or that adds something new to your collection.

Give yourself a budget: One of the best ways to eliminate unnecessary spending and to help reset focus on buying things that you actually need is giving yourself a budget. Knowing a limit you have to spend on beauty products each month will weed out the frivolous things and really get you to think about what matters to you.

Read more lifestyle blogs: If your Bloglovin' feed is post after post of products you need to get, it's going to be really hard to ignore the urge to spend. Follow some lifestyle blogs to mix things up. Not only will you get a break from the constant bombardment of beauty products, you'll also find more inspiration for your own blog!

In the end it's up to each and every one of us to reign ourselves back in and stop spending money on things we think we need. What are some of the ways you escape the "I need it"s?

xoxo Kayla

  1. I try to shop my stash if that makes sense. I'm currently saving up for my trip to New York and I want to get a lottttt I cannot get over here so I just tell myself to wait a few more weeks. It's not that hard when you have as much as I do.

    1. Shopping your stash is a great tip and one I definitely should have added to the list! I also try and do a spending ban before a big trip where I know I'll be buying a lot of stuff. When I went to Italy I went a bit beauty product crazy but hadn't bought anything for a month or so before then.

  2. Great post! I read so many beauty blogs so I often feel like I just need everything. For me, doing research and making sure that I don't already own the product (or a similar shade) that I "need" are key to smarter shopping.

    1. I'm terribly at buying the same shade in lipsticks. I'm a sucker for a my lips but better shade!

  3. I love these tips, I try and wait a few days between an impulsive want before buying it, normally I get over it pretty quickly!

  4. I just try to tell myself again and again that nobody needs 10 versions of the same thing such as neutral eyeshadow palettes and the likes. Yes, new releases are pretty, but if I have the same thing lying around in my stash in slightly different packaging, it's just a waste of money anyways!

  5. Great post, these are really good ideas! I try and buy products that I genuinely need, and I always do my research before I go shopping because it helps me not to impulse buy xx
