My Relationship with Powder

Powder and I have had a complicated relationship. And I mean all powders...bronzers, highlighters, pressed setting powders...There are times when I'm absolutely nuts about them and can't go a day without brushing one (or many) onto my face. Yet lately my powder bin has gone unloved in my makeup drawers.

I'm the first to throw my hand into the air when asked if I'm a dewy face kind of gal (who would be asking, I don't know...) so naturally I would want to shy away from the mattifying products. Sadly that seems to include bronzer as well. Mostly because I'm downright terrible at contouring and partly because I'm an equal opportunity powder hater lately...

Trust me I know that not all powders give that cakey look to the skin and with the right powder and the right brush magic can happen. I guess I'm just feeling uninspired in the powder department and need your help! What's your favorite powder? How and why do you apply it? Is there a setting powder out there that will let me have my dewy finish while still helping my makeup last all day? Any advice send it my way!

xoxo Kayla

  1. Powder is something I have a love hate relationship with as well, depending on how my skin is I will often just wear it down my nose where I get super shiny, but everywhere else it gets caky and flaky and its just gross!

  2. i pretty much went the entire summer without using powder, i just stuck to my cream products. now the weather is getting colder i tend to gravitate towards using more powders and mattifying products. it's a seasonal thing for me xx

  3. I think I'm a fan of translucent loose powders when I'm wanting to keep my dewy look, they just seem to be much lighter and leave a 'real skin' look xx

  4. I completely agree with anyone saying translucent loose powders. Pressed powders by nature just appear more cakey on the skin because all the powder particles are stuck together. You don't get that issue with loose powders and they just leave the most beautiful finish!

  5. I am a huge powder fan, anything cream scares me frankly. I love the MAC Studio Fix Pressed Powder Foundation as a base, applied with the Real Techniques Powder Brush, I then contour with the contour powder in the Sleek Faceform Palette applied with the Real Techniques Retractable Bronzer Brush, Blusher I vary between MAC Mocha and Sleek Sahara applied with the Real Techniques Multitask Brush (do you see a theme occurring) and I highlight using the MAC MSF in Soft and Gentle applied with the Real Techniques Contour Brush.

I hope this helps! Reviews of some of these products can be found on my blog if you are interested

  6. ooo what a lovely collection of powders! the rimmel stay matte foundation has always been a favourite of mine! x

  7. I love the mac invisble setting powder, its amazing. So lightweight, no colour to it, never looks cakey, photographs well!

  8. My all time favorite powder is the Laura Mercier translucent powder! It doesn't give extra coverage but it sets everything, is sweat proof, and just gives a really nice finish to your makeup. I just apply it with a big powder brush from Sephora.
