Winged Liner Tips and Tricks

Winged Liner Tips and Tricks

Take it from someone who knows first hand, winged eyeliner can be a tricky devil. I still remember my first few attempts at applying the stuff. A mess all over my face, nearly impossible to get off, and no wing in sight. Although I'm still learning myself, here are a few tips and tricks I've picked up along the way.

  • Take it slow. Winged eyeliner is definitely not a quick flick like the magazines make it seem. Take your time to really get into your eye lash line for a nice, smooth line.
  • Press rather than drag the eyeliner tip. If you press the applicator into your lash line you'll produce a much darker, nicer line than if you try to tug the pen across your lids.
  • Draw the wing upwards from the angle of your bottom lash line, then fill it back towards the top of your lashes. You'll get a more uniform wing on both sides at the same angle.
  • The liquid eyeliner you use matters. I thought starting out that any liquid pen would do. Silly me. They come in all shapes and tip sizes, so pick one that works best for you. I like the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner because it has a pointed tip and the formula is wet, but not too wet.
  • Practice a bunch. The only way I really improved my liquid liner skills is through a whole lot of mess-ups and retries.
  • Try the brush at different angles. You never know if one direction of the tip will make a better line than the other. So flip the pen around and try out different pressures. So directions will produce a thicker line, provide more product, produce a thin line, and more.
Like all things beauty related (I'm looking at you contouring), a new skill takes time and focus. Don't get discouraged if you don't have cat eye perfect liner after the first go. Keep at it and you'll be rockin' the winged look like a pro in no time.

  1. These are such great tips Kayla, thanks for sharing :) I definitely need to remind myself to take it slow with the liner, if I try to apply it in a hurry in the morning it usually ends up disastrous haha. I also love the Maybelline liquid liner in the pot. It comes with it's own little brush and I find it's very easy to work with and stays in place all day.

  2. The Stila liner is definitely one I need to try! I am in love with the Maybelline master precise, but after a long day it does tend to fade.

  3. I need to remember to press it in and take it slower along the lashline. I get so impatient!!! xx
